For a while, Alonzo Mourning thought his basketball career was over. Before winning the NBA championship with the Miami Heat, Mourning dealt with some serious life-threatening issues. He was diagnosed with focal glomerulosclerosis, a rare kidney disease. The disease causes kidney failure, and the only treatment is to receive a transplant.
In 2003, Mourning accepted DOUBLE transplantation. His cousin even asked him to remain anonymous and even have a kidney. After two successful transplants, he was able to return to basketball. This rare disease changed Moning’s life and focused him on his health. He encouraged people to “focus more on your health” and “become an organ donor.” He said that there are many people waiting for transplants, just waiting for someone to become their hero.
