Ex-Sixers GM Sam Hinkie comments on Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid’s trade rumors
Sam Hinkie took part in ESPN’s Pablo Torre podcast to cover the Philadelphia 76ers and the NBA, as well as various other topics.
During the interview, the former General Manager of Sixers responded to rumors that the Joel Embiid-Ben Simmons duo are about to break up on the deal.
Hinkie claimed it wasn’t strictly necessary to split the duo as superstars are hard to come by in their prime numbers in the NBA.
“Oh god. Don’t people remember what it took to get them? Right? For everyone,” Hinkie said. “It’s not impossible to get a star player in the NBA, but close. Right? And requires an incredible amount of luck, or an amazing amount of time, or some other way to try to achieve it. What is Joel? 26? To have a young player who is nominal in the traditional sense and is just in his prime and says, “We have to be empty.” No, job one is that you have to get great players on your team. That is job one. And he is one. I’m not alone in that. “
The former NBA executive was the man behind “The Process” in Philadelphia, which caused mixed feelings among NBA fans as Hinkie built teams in hopes of losing as much as possible to secure a good draft position.
At the same time, he was signing cheap players to exchange for other more valuable assets. Using this strategy, the infamous GM Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons were able to draw to create the molecule of a championship team.
Now the Sixers got Daryl Morey, Hinkie’s former boss, to overhaul the team’s roster after a disappointing 2019/2020 campaign.
