Gary Payton to teammate: I’m going to kill your family
Gary Payton is considered one of the greatest trash talkers of all time. Though, in this particular situation, he would probably take back everything he said. It got extremely hot during a fight with Ricky Pierce (his teammate) in Game 1 of the 1994 NBA playoffs.
You wouldn’t have expected such an outbreak as the Seattle SuperSonics overrun the nuggets by 25 points at half-time. But George Karl vividly remembers what happened.
He explains: “I didn’t see the first outbreak three years ago, but he and Ricky Pierce got into some kind of discussion and threatened with weapons at the halfway point of the first game in Denver. The players told me they had guns in their pockets was “I’m going to kill your family”. It was crazy. “
The hostile relationship between Gary Payton and Ricky Pierce continued throughout the series because in Game 3 Pierce was fed up with Payton “taking too many shots” and said “he had to pass the ball more”. Payton continued: “If Ricky had a problem with taking too many pictures, he should have said something earlier.” Even though they were 2-0 in the series, the chemistry fell apart and that was evident in their game. The nuggets made a comeback and won the series.
To date, no one knows exactly where the hostility came from.
