New York’s Statue of Liberty coach Walt Hopkins met with the media shortly before coaching the first game. This is his thoughts on the starting guard combination of Layshia Clarendon and Sabrina Ionescu, as well as his first appearance as the WNBA head coach.
Staring at Layshia Clarendon and Sabrina Ionescu together:
It can be seen that they like playing with each other very much. You put two people with high basketball IQs together, there won’t be too much trouble finding chemicals there. Therefore, regarding these two aspects, I think there are many things to be excited about. There is a lot of variability at both ends of the court and what they can do. They are all strong guards. You might not think of Layshia as a strong defender, but she is very strong, grumpy and smart, so they can all defend bigger players without sacrificing speed or decision-making ability, but can shoot to the other end. . Therefore, they will become an important part of our work. I don’t think you will see too many lineup combinations, and one of them is not on the floor. Because there is a general, they are the hosts of the show.
In his first outing as a head coach:
As far as my coach’s debut is concerned, this is every moment. Indeed, this is the only way I know how to do it. I think this is the only way I can do it now, because so much has happened. I guess there may be some neurotic anxiety, but there is nothing more than when I was a player or an assistant coach. I think if I make a mistake, I will make a mistake. And, you know, I’m worried that I won’t actually make changes in one way or another, so I focus more on things I can control and do my best to put them in this position to succeed.
