One day after the separation from head coach Svetislav Pesic, Barcelona signed a three-year contract with Sarunas Jasikevicius. The 44-year-old coach has been Zalgiris’ head coach since 2016. During his reign, Kaunas switched from EuroLeague outsiders to a playoff team.
Saras led Zalgiris to a shocking appearance in the EuroLeague Final Four in 2018. The Greens lost the semi-final to Fenerbahce, who would later take second place, but took third place by defeating CSKA Moscow. Jasikevicius’ departure marks the end of an era for Zalgiris.
He said several times that Barcelona is one of his favorite places in the world. Saras has been connected to Barca practically every summer since he became head coach, but the two sides have not yet reached an agreement.
The four-time EuroLeague champion as a player Saras had two spells with Barcelona in 2000-2003 and 2012-2013 before returning to his hometown Kaunas for one last season of his active career.
Zalgiris also announced the departure of Saras.
Before agreeing to Barcelona, Jasikevicius was wooed by Fenerbahce and reportedly made progress in his negotiations. According to reports, he has agreed to a less lucrative barca deal than that of the Turkish giants.
