Released on February 1, 2021

From February 1, 2021, teams and players can complete transactions, sign contracts and agree to provide quotations. The team began negotiations with its reserved players and restricted and unrestricted free agents on January 15.

Free agent definition

  • Core players: The core title gives the team the exclusive right to negotiate with players. Players can only get 3 core nominations in their career. In 2022, this will be twice their career.
  • Reserved players: Players who have served for three years or less can get qualified discounts and become reserved players. The player’s former team has the exclusive right to negotiate.
  • Restricted free agents: Players who have served for four years can get qualified discounts and become restricted free agents. Restricted free agency agencies match the contract offer of another team to give the player’s former team the right to sign the player (the right of first refusal). If a player signs an offer with another team, the player’s previous team will determine whether they wish to match within four days from the date of receiving the offer. If the offer matches, the player will stay in their previous team. If the offer is not matched within four days, the player will sign a contract with the offer team.
  • Unrestricted free agents: Players who have served for less than five years will become unrestricted free agents if they do not receive qualified offers. An unrestricted free agent can freely sign with any team, as long as her previous team has not designated him as a core player.
Expired contracts/teams have exclusive negotiation rights
  • Expired contracts/teams have exclusive bargaining rights: In 2021, the team reserves the exclusive bargaining rights for players who opt out or otherwise not participate in the final season of the contract. Players whose contracts expire are free to negotiate contracts with their own teams, but not with other WNBA teams.
