Yao Ming retired on this day in 2011
Nine years ago, Yao Ming announced his retirement from the NBA.
The big man from China lived up to the incredible hype around him, but retired due to a foot injury at the age of 30.
The Houston Rockets selected Yao Ming with the first overall pick in the 2002 Draft. During his rookie season, he participated in a game with Shaquille O’Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers. He scored 10 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks, including multiple blocks against O’Neal.
Yao Ming became the dominant force at both ends of the court. Despite his weight of 7 feet 6 inches and 310 pounds, he is still very skilled and athletic.
Yao Ming has been an All-Star in all eight seasons in the NBA. He averaged 19 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. He also performed well in the playoffs, averaging 19.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.5 rebounds in 28 playoff games.
Yao Ming was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. A few months later, the Rockets retired his No. 11 jersey.
